Achievement
Approximately 96% of the teachers in Washoe County hold the highest degree attainable in their field. Students in the district continue to score higher than the national averages on major tests. The Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills is taken in grades 2 - 8. Another important indicator of efficiency in education is the college entrance exams. On the 1996-97 Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), Washoe County students scored above the national average.

Pupil/Teacher Ratios
The Class Size Reduction Act is continuing to have a positive impact on pupil/teacher ratios in the Reno/Sparks area. Currently, the first and second grades have a pupil/teacher ratio of 16.5:1 while the average student/teacher ratio is 26.1:1 in the elementary grades and 26.8:1 in the second grades.

Reno/Sparks Private Schools
There are 27 private education facilities in Washoe County. Bishop Manogue is the predominant private high school in Reno/Sparks.

Reno/Sparks Public Schools
The Washoe County School District currently has 60 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, and 12 high schools which encompass the Reno/Sparks and Incline areas. Three new high schools were built in 2002.

These schools are distributed through Washoe County and provide educational opportunities for nearly 55,000 students. Information about the Washoe County School District can be obtained by contacting the school distict at (775) 348-0200.

School Registration
Any new student needs a birth certificate or proof of identity (e.g., valid passport, a church baptismal record, or a driver's license with a picture) that must be provided within 30 days for permanent enrollment of the child. A student must present a certificate of immunization including diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, rubella and rebeola. Lastly, the school must have a signed release from each parent or guardian over 18 years old authorizing the district to obtain a copy of the child's school record from the school most recently attended.

Glenn hare Occupational Center

This center provides alternative classes to the high school student including culinary arts, business systems, child care, fashion merchandising, health occupations, printing, graphics, horticulture, electronic and building trades.

Career College of Northern Nevada
This accredited trade and technical school provides specialized training in electronic technology, data processing, micro-computers, word processing, and medical and legal office management. Financial assistance and job placement are available. For more information call (775) 856-2266.

Desert Research Institute
The Desert Research Institute conducts full-time basic and applied environmental research and developmental research and development on air, water, biological and cultural resources and related technologies. For more information call (775) 673-7300.

Morrison College of Reno
The college provides business career-oriented programs including associate degrees in Business Administration, Legal Administration, and Office Administration. Day and evening classes begin every five weeks. For more information call (775) 850-0700.

Truckee Meadows Community College
Student: The college currently serves over 11,250 students of all ages. Any high school graduate or GED holder of 18 years or older may attend the college.

Degrees: TMCC is an ideal place to complete the first two years of a four-year degree, train for an occupational career or simply enjoy the experience of learning something new.

The school has 50 fully accredited major leading to degree programs and specific job training prorams.

University of Nevada, Reno
Student: UNR has a student population of approximately 14,000. The majority of students are from Nevada, and the aveage age of the undergraduate student is 25 years. For more information call the Jones Visitor Center at (775) 784-4684.

Degrees: UNR offers a wide range of academic programs. Currently the university has 95 majors for undergraduate work, 65 masters, 28 doctorate degree programs and a four-year medical school. Academic areas include:
